Zambia Green Jobs at the 2016 Zambia International Property (ZIP) Expo
On May 5th, as the Official Partner, the Zambia Green Jobs Programme was joined by second time sponsors First National Bank Zambia (FNB), Zambia Property Owners Association (ZAPOA) and Knight Frank in kicking off the 216 edition of the Zambia International Property (ZIP) Expo. This high-profile event took place from May 5th until 7th at the Mulungushi Conference Centre in Lusaka, organized by SmartHomes International, Jannou New York and R!evolution Media.
The property expo was officially opened by the Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Hon. Margaret Mwanakatwe, MP, who recognised the participation of the Zambia Green Jobs Programme and Government of Finland in supporting the local real estate industry in a substantive and material manner. She further acknowledged the role of the Expo in presenting the opportunities and advantages of investing in the Zambian property sector. Zip Expo Chairman Mr. Chris Jannou stated that albeit difficult economic times, the Zip Expo has managed to double interest and participants as compared to last years' event. Also present at the opening ceremony and representing 298 Chiefdoms through the Save Rural Africa Foundation, were H.R.H. Chief Chibesakunda XI and H.R.H. Chipepo who provided insight and commentary on the status of customary land.
With this year's theme 'Building Your Future with Property', the Expo and accompanying conference programme showcased the Zambia property market by providing a business platform for investors, funds, developers, suppliers, banks, government agencies, contractors and the real estate community at large. The 40 plus exhibitors present comprised of real estate developers, financiers, procurement managers, investment fund managers, national institutions, chambers of commerce, CSOs and media from more than 10 different countries including China, Turkey, the UK, South Africa and the US.
The second day of the Expo included a conference programme with ZGJP hosting a panel discussion titled "Women: The Future of Residential and Commercial Real Estate". The panel wasmoderated by Ms. Natasha Chiumya, Advocate of the High Court of Zambia, Folotiya & Chiumya Legal Practitioners and included Ms. Omba Kayumba Lacey, Empretec Women in Business Award Finalist & Director, Katcey Construction, Ms. Dorothy Mulwila, President, Zambia Association of Women in Construction, ZAWIC, Ms. Pat Mwase, CEO and Chairperson, Build CBU and Ms. Nambula Kachumi, Executive Director, WECREATE Zambia. The panel provided a spotlight on all pressing aspects of construction regulations and policies, gender equity, career progressions in skills and training, green construction benefits and overcoming financing challenges and more.
In addition, ZGJP supported panels on:

- How Your Plot Purchase Can Finance Itself by Nkwasi Developments,
- The Questions You Need To Ask Before Purchasing Land by Johan Richter, PropertyDirector, Galaunia Farms

The Expo proved to be a good opportunity for the ZGJP to bring together innovative organizations within Zambia to collaborate for mutual commercial benefit. Enterprises were given the opportunity for B2B meetings with prime contractors and corporations to learn about specific procurement opportunities. Scheduled supporting networking and educational events included speed mentoring which resulted in promising leads with key institutions and transnational corporations.
The next Zip Expo is scheduled to take place in May, 2017.
