Inclusive green growth sustainble enterprises more and better jobs
Green jobs are decent jobs that contribute to preserve or restore the environment, be they in traditional sectors such as manufacturing and construction, or in new, emerging green sectors such as renewable energy and energy efficiency.
The built environment comes with great impact on the environment, human health and the economy. By greening the construction sector we can transform this impact and enjoy an array of socio-economic benefits. In fact, going green makes good business sense and offers excellent opportunities for inclusive green growth, especially for local MSMEs.
Green building (also known as green construction or sustainable building) refers to a structure and using process that is environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition.
One sector with high potential for the creation of green jobs through MSME development in Zambia is the building construction sector. The construction sector played a central role in Zambia’s growth in recent years and presently makes up approximately 21.1 per cent of the economy.
The monitoring and evaluation strategy combines before and after comparisons together with those comparing changes in performance between the participants (treatment group) and non-participants (control group) of the Programme.
ILO-led Green Jobs Programme in Zambia is expected to create 5,000 new green jobs by 2017 thanks to a partnership between the government and the construction sector.
